Hiking Multnomah Falls in Oregon

One of the “smaller” falls at Multnomah Falls park.

Yes, we did. That was my goal after completing some trails at Mount Rainier. Mind you, I’m coming back from years of inactivity, so the video below, when you see me hiking with my trekking poles, it’s because my knees feel way better after the hike when I use them.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. What matters is we went to the top of Multnomah and above it. The main falls go 620 feet high. Our hike shows a lot of the “feeder” falls that I suppose lead to Multnomah. If you are going to hike the trails, trekking poles are nice, and I saw other people using them, but I also saw people in flip flops or tennis shoes practically running up and down the trail. You probably will want to wear better shoes than flip flops — lots of uneven ground and rocks on this trail. I also would recommend not going up the main way with the 11 switchbacks counted out for you. Take the back way off the parking lot. You will still have switchbacks, but my husband insists it’s the easier route. It also is way more scenic, as you’ll see with all of the bends offering you views of rushing water. An amazing hike!

At the halfway point of the hike (before we started to descend) we had a snack of nuts, seeds and fruit. When we were finished, we drove to a state park of the interstate and by the Columbia River and had a picnic of tuna-less salad, peanut butter and crackers and more fruit (peaches, sliced pineapple, cherries). Very satisfying and way cheaper than going out for dinner. I made the tuna-less salad the night before, and I featured that recipe in a previous post. That is my go-to recipe to make ahead before hikes. We also pack trail mix and lots of fresh fruit that we leave in a cooler in the car for later.

My little “Hit the Trail” bag I got at Mount Rainier, posed along the Columbia River on the Oregon side.
